The UTPA College of Arts and Humanities and South Texas College are proud to present A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Extending Influence, which becomes the second annual Rio Grande Valley ceramics exhibition to be held in the month of June and now expands into the conference arena. Exhibits will run simultaneously at STC’s Pecan Campus Library Gallery and the University of Texas Pan American’s University Gallery from June 2 through July 3.The conference itself takes place on June 13 and 14, 2008 at STC’s Pecan Campus in McAllen with special ceramics demonstrations taking place at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. All activities are free and open to the public.
UTPA Ceramics Lecturer and organizer of A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Extending Influence, Chris Leonard said “As we did to kick this show off a year ago, our concept is to once again feature ten ceramic works per school (undergraduate work along side graduate students, instructors, and tenured professors, all combining skill and imagination from varying experience levels as chosen by their invited faculty member) which indicate the wide array of possibility in the ceramic medium currently available within our region. It will make an interesting an informative mix and if you look closely and pay attention you will see connections that might not be readily apparent”.
The exhibition features works shown side by side from faculty and students created at neighboring universities and community colleges including The University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College, South Texas College, The University of Texas-Pan American, Galveston College, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Tarrant County College, Tyler Junior College, Mesa Community College, Central Arizona College, The University of North Texas and Montana State University-Billings.
The symposium will include lectures and demonstrations by Jake Allee (MFA , University of North Texas) of Tyler Junior College, Jeremy Schmidt (MFA, University of Texas Pan American) of Mesa Community College and Central Arizona College, Marcia Selsor (MFA, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale) of Montana State University-Billings, and Beth Thomas (MFA, University of North Texas) of Galveston College..
