"Utopias In Literature and the Arts" - R Hamilton, CAS 184
A lecture and multimedia demonstration, with class participation. This session and the one following on "Dystopias in Literature and the Arts" will identify common characteristics and goals of utopias and dystopias; give an overview of these visionary societies in literature as well as music, art, & film; and introduce the audience to theories of utopian/dystopian discourse and visual media. Students will also be asked to envision their own utopian (or dystopian) communities. Students may come to either session or both.

This is an art performance series that will feature artists from the Texas Commission on the Arts Cultural Connections touring roster along with UTPA Art Department students and Faculty.

"The Corrido" Panel: Linguistics (P. Anderson), Creative Writing (J. Braithwaite), Music (F. Loera), Literature (M. Noe) MLL (E. Ochoa), CAS 225
This lecture/discussion considers a number of corridos collected ove rhte past 25 years from amont older members of the local RGV communities as to their linguitic structure and social purpose.

"Panel on Crusades" - P. Adair, K. Grant, CAS 254
As a panel we will look at the crusades from several points of view stressing the effects of the crusades on participants and settlers. The first panelist will discuss Pope Urban’s call for the Crusade and its success; a second participant will look at a queen of Jerusalem and her sister, both of whom were 2nd generation settlers and ruled Latin Crusader states at critical points in history; a final discussant will look at the serious consequences the call to fight for the Holy Land had on several generations of Flemish counts. One of the participants is a student in the MA program in History and uses her research for her thesis as a basis for her discussion.

A roundtable discussion on the role Texans played in the Greater story of the War, the importance Texas had to the Confederacy, and the role of Tejanos and Mexico in the War.

Improvisation Workshop - D. Carren, CAS 107
What do Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, or Drew Carey have in common?
They are all masters of improvisational comedy, a form of theatre in which performers spontaneously produce story, character, dialogue, and lots and lots of laughs. In this workshop, learn how to create humor on the run.
